Free Lessons in Loaf for Primary School Children

Cinnamon Square has launched a new initiative to encourage local children to make bread and to help them understand the science involved in baking. Local primary schools are being invited to apply for free breadmaking classes at Cinnamon Square’s scientific baking laboratory ‘The Makery.’

The breadmaking classes are for children in years 5 & 6 from Watford, Croxley Green, Rickmansworth and Chorleywood Schools.

During the visit the children will get hands-on making Real Bread within a real bakery environment. They will also learn about ingredients and their functionality, and the science behind bread by participating in experiments to understand how yeast works and what gluten looks like. They will also find out what Real Bread is and why it is important in their diet.

The classes are also aimed at training the accompanying teachers. After the lesson the teachers will take away all the necessary information to be able to repeat this breadmaking class within their own school environment.

Three school visits will be made available each year. A maximum of 15 children can attend at one time so if necessary, each school will be offered 2 sessions.

Help in the Community

Cinnamon Square is delighted to back Watford Mencap which is a local charity supporting over 500 people with a learning disability and their families in South West Herts.

Many people do not realise that as a local independent Society, Watford Mencap receives no funding from national Mencap and must raise all its funds locally.

The charity has a Children’s Centre offering activities to 150 children and respite for their carers and siblings; advice and advocacy services for all ages; adult learning and leisure opportunities; one-to-one support to people with a learning disability to carry out everyday tasks, go out into the community and do leisure activities; 3 residential homes in Oxhey, Chorleywood and Rickmansworth; and housing-related support, to enable people to live as independently as possible.
